Isn't this a beautiful spot to have lunch? With the clearer air the last couple of days, PL students have been able to enjoy our new picnic tables. Eating outdoors is much safer during the pandemic so we encourage kids to eat outside when the air is safe.

Pyramid Lake Jr./Sr. High School will be starting at the REGULAR TIME today. We will NOT be having a start as Washoe Schools are. They are calling it because of air quality for kids who live up north close to the Dixie Fire. Our buses are already out getting kids, so we will start our day at 7:30, as usual.

Lakers families, we've been getting some questions about uniform attire. Please make sure your students are not wearing leggings or jeans to school. Thank you for your helping us teach the students how to dress like a Laker!

PLHS is so lucky to have these two women on staff! They make our school a truly unique and special place for our students. One of our changes this year is that we now have twice as many Native Studies-based courses! Mrs. Wright teaches Native Studies to all of our freshmen, plus Native Art and Native Dance. Mrs. Brady teaches Native photography, Native Film, Native Geography (with cooking), and UNITY as a school-wide leadership class. We are honored to have them on staff sharing their wisdom with our students!

We celebrated two summer graduates today! Here is one of our graduates, Sam, with our Virtual Learning Instructor, Shari Dunn. Shari knows that working independently on Edgenuity is hard for most adolescents, so she works hard to establish supportive relationships with each one of them so she can encourage them in a way that is meaningful to them to keep going. This summer 11 students completed 21 classes in Edgenuity and two finished the courses they needed to graduate! If your student is already a PLHS student and wants to learn more about distance learning, see the application and contract below and/or reach out to Ms. Dunn at dunnsk@plhs.us.

Pyramid Lake Jr./Sr. High will offer the opportunity for students to participate in distance learning for the 2021-22 school year. The primary purpose for offering a distance learning option is so families who are worried about their students’ health during the COVID-19 pandemic have an option to keep students home while continuing in their studies. _____ Staff Support PLHS staff will support students who are participating in distance learning. Staff support may include daily or weekly emails and/or text messages, support studying for and taking assessments, technical support, and tutoring sessions. _____ Distance Learning Software The software we will be using for distance learning this year is called Edgenuity. Students will work independently on Edgenuity, progressing through courses at their own pace. _____ Course enrollment Typically, students will be expected to complete six (6) semester courses each semester, although in some circumstances may be enrolled in more or fewer courses. The courses will be chosen by the guidance counselor, in consultation with the family. _____ Attendance Students will be expected to make progress in each class each week. Attendance will be taken by ensuring that the student has at least twenty (20) active minutes working in each class each day, Monday -Thursday. If at the end of the week, the student has not worked in each class for a total of eighty (80) minutes, the student will be placed on distance learning probation. _____ Weekly Lesson Completion Requirements Students are expected to complete at least four (4) lessons per class per week (or as arranged with the Virtual Learning Instructor or School Counselor) and maintain adequate progress toward course completion (that is, be “on track” in Edgenuity). If students do not maintain adequate progress in a course, the student will be placed on distance learning probation. _____ Distance Learning Probation If a student does not meet attendance or course progress requirements for any of their courses for a week, the student will be placed on distance learning probation for the following week. If they do not meet attendance and lesson completion requirements for the probation week, they will be removed from the distance learning cohort and will be enrolled in school with their peers. If a student is placed on distance learning probation three times during a semester, they will be removed from the distance learning cohort and will be enrolled in school with their peers. _____ Timeline Students will be expected to complete all of their enrolled courses in the semester in which they are enrolled. Failure to do so will result in either being removed from the distance learning cohort or having to start the course over again. Appeals may be made for special circumstances.

Both the Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that students attend school in-person this fall. Pyramid Lake Jr./Sr. High School is reopening in full to students on August 9, but will monitor the guidance of local and national health organizations as the pandemic develops. Because we need plenty of space for social distancing in our classrooms, we will be capping enrollment for each grade level at 24 students, except for 6th grade, which we will cap at 12 students. Priority will be given as follows: Returning students who finished the 2020-21 school year with us Students who live on the Pyramid Lake reservation Household members of Pyramid Lake Jr./Sr. High School students and staff Students coming from other areas We will not enroll any students who are not Pyramid Lake residents until after the first day of school, which is August 9. Meet the Counselor Team! July 29, 2021 Our school counseling team is excited to welcome you all back from an especially challenging year. We would also like to welcome our “new” guidance counselor Ms. Jacie Paulsen! Ms. Paulsen has been a part of the Laker family for the past four years teaching English and being involved in many other activities at PLHS. Ms. Paulsen will be joining Ms. Lynsie Dunn as the second member of our counseling team here at Pyramid Lake Jr./Sr. High School where we look forward to meeting the needs of all of our students. As School Counselors, our primary responsibilities are to promote the academic, career, and social/emotional development of all of our students. We look forward to offering support to our students, staff, families, and community. We will be meeting with students individually and in small groups, conducting classroom guidance interventions, meeting with parents, collaborating with teachers and staff, and consulting with community organizations to benefit and meet the needs of all Pyramid Lake Jr./Sr. High School students. At Pyramid Lake Jr./Sr. High School our Counselors will be the points of contact for the TMCC Jump Start program, transcripts, scheduling, and academic support, as well as therapeutic interventions and community referrals. ❗❗❗We only have one sixth grade spot left!❗❗❗ We have been asked if eleventh graders can join us as distance learners and work on Edgenuity until a spot opens. Unfortunately, we can't do that. For a few reasons, we have to count our distance learners in our total enrollment.

2021-22 Welcome letter from our Interim Principal! School starts on Monday 8/9!
over 3 years ago, Sarah Russell
July 29, 2021 Dear Families, Welcome back to school! It is exciting to be welcoming students back into the building after five quarters and two summers away! It has been a strange last year-and-a-half and it has been our honor to be your family’s school through it all. Thank you for trusting us with the safety and education of your student. Who knows what the 2021-22 school year will bring? We will be able to stay open? Will we return to virtual instruction? No one can guess. We commit to doing everything we can to offer your student the best education possible in the safest environment possible. We have made some changes this year. We have a large group of students interested in participating in Jump Start, our dual credit program in partnership with TMCC. Because these students will be attending some classes at TMCC, we have changed our bell schedule to a block schedule. Students will have eight total classes. Mondays and Wednesdays will be A Days and Tuesdays and Thursdays will be B days. Students will attend classes 1-4 on A days and periods 5-8 on B days. They will also have Advisory every day. Class periods will be longer, but teachers will build in lots of activities and some break time. Our math programming is another change for this year. Students will have access to advanced math programming when they are ready for it. Most students will also have increased time and support in math class so we can help them become more confident in their math skills and make sure they are ready for opportunities like Jump Start, the millennium scholarship, and other college and scholarship opportunities based on ACT scores and high school transcripts. Another exciting change is that we have increased courses that focus on Native studies and local issues. These courses make PLHS unique and we are proud to be offering more of them. While we are excited about these changes and the opportunities they bring, we are also worried about COVID, the increasing cases of the Delta variant, and making sure students are safe. Please see the attached flyer for more information about some of our COVID safety measures. Please keep students home if they are sick or if they have spent 15 minutes in proximity to someone who has tested positive. We will communicate with you if we have reason to believe your student was exposed at school. We hope this pandemic is under control soon and PLHS can enjoy the great things about being Lakers: spending time with our Laker community and celebrating our Laker community. Whatever this year brings, we are honored to have your family with us for the 2021-22 school year and we will do everything we can to make sure it is joyous and successful for your student. Sincerely, Sarah Russell Interim Principal Pyramid Lake High School
